Serving Union County Contractors

We write the full contractor program — General Liability, Workers Comp, Commercial Auto, Tools & Equipment, Umbrella, and Builders Risk — for contractors across Union County, including Elizabeth, Plainfield, Union, Linden, Westfield, Summit and Cranford. One intake quotes every line; you don't run six separate quote events with six separate agents.

NJ Contractors Insurance Center is an independent, NJ-licensed agency based in Flemington. We serve Union County contractors with same-day COIs, proactive renewals, and trade-by-trade carrier matching that one-line-at-a-time agencies don't do.

What underwriters ask about Union County work

Union County pairs the port and refinery corridor in Elizabeth and Linden with affluent suburban residential in Westfield, Summit and Cranford — two very different underwriting profiles in one county.

  • Port and refinery work has specialized requirements — Terminal work at Port Elizabeth can trigger USL&H (Longshore) exposure that standard NJ Workers Comp does not answer, and refinery contracts in Linden bring high limits and strict safety prequalification.
  • Fleet exposure above the state average — Union County contractors run more vehicles and more miles. Driver MVRs, radius and hired/non-owned coverage are the levers on Commercial Auto pricing here.
  • Affluent suburban residential is a severity market — Westfield and Summit custom work and additions carry high property values — the umbrella does the heavy lifting.
  • Warehouse and fit-out completed operations — Racking, sprinkler, dock and electrical work generates claims after handover, so completed-operations additional-insured wording is essential.

Union County Questions

Common questions.

What is USL&H and do I need it?
The Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act covers employees injured on or adjacent to navigable waters. If your crews work the terminals or piers at Port Elizabeth, standard New Jersey Workers Comp may not respond to their injury. The endorsement is separate and separately rated.
Are employees covered driving their own trucks to jobs?
Only with hired and non-owned auto liability. Without it, your business is still named in the suit and only the employee's personal policy responds — usually at limits far below what a commercial claim requires.
What should a Westfield or Summit custom builder carry?
$1M/$2M General Liability plus a $2M–$5M umbrella. Home values drive the severity, and a homeowner's carrier will subrogate against you after a fire or water loss.
Do refinery contracts require anything unusual?
Yes — high limits, safety prequalification through a third-party platform, waiver of subrogation, and often contractor-controlled safety documentation. We build the certificate and the program to the prequalification standard.
