NJ Locksmiths Insurance
Locksmiths are a low-hazard specialty trade that places easily in the standard market — but with two wrinkles most agents miss: the municipal bond requirement and E&O for high-security and safe work.
Who We Write
Mobile locksmiths, storefront lock shops, automotive locksmiths, and commercial access-control installers. Most NJ locksmith operations are solo or small.
The Coverage Stack You’ll Want
- General Liability — $1M/$2M standard, structured with the additional-insured endorsements your accounts require.
- Workers Comp — required for any NJ employee, including most officers.
- Commercial Auto — service vehicles and employee drivers.
- Tools & Equipment — your tools wherever they live, plus installation floater where you install customer materials.
- Commercial Umbrella — extra limits over GL, Auto, and EL.
- Surety Bond — many NJ municipalities require a locksmith bond. We capture the bond need at quote.
Carrier Notes
Locksmiths are low-hazard and fit standard markets easily — Travelers, Nationwide, The Hartford, Next, and AmTrust all have appetite. The complications are the bond and, for safe/high-security work, professional liability (E&O) for the advice and access you provide.
NJ-Specific Considerations
- Municipal bond requirement — many NJ municipalities require a locksmith license bond. We handle it via Surety Bonds (V1 lead-capture, full build in V2).
- E&O for high-security / safe work — if you work safes, master-key systems, or high-security accounts, professional liability covers the advice-and-access exposure GL won’t.
- Care, custody & control — handling customer keys and property; the right endorsement matters.
- Automotive work — programming and cutting keys for vehicles is its own low-frequency exposure, generally standard-market.
Locksmiths Questions
Common questions.
Locksmith bond requirement — do you handle that?
Yes, via Surety Bonds (V2 full build; V1 placeholder captures the lead). Many NJ municipalities require a locksmith bond before you can operate.
Do I need E&O as a locksmith?
If you work safes, high-security accounts, or master-key systems, strongly recommended. For basic residential re-key work, GL usually suffices. We’ll talk through it at quote.
I handle customer keys and property — is that covered?
With the right care, custody & control endorsement, yes. We add it where the operation calls for it.
I do automotive lockout and key programming — different program?
No, same standard program. Automotive locksmith work is low-frequency and places in the standard market.
